Green Sea Turtle Overview

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are the second largest sea turtle after the leatherback. They are one of the Earth's most ancient creatures and have been for 110 million years.

Their name comes from the green coloring of their fat, not their shell, which varies between yellow to greenish-olive. There is a group of green turtles in the Eastern Pacific with darker shells that are called black turtles by the local community.

These turtles are found mostly in the tropical and sub-tropical waters. There is a large population in Hawaii, but can be found in Australia, Mexico, India, and Asia.
